"After Katrina, Pet Custody a Prominent Legal Issue; New Documentary Highlights the Problem"

When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and the levees broke, many who were forced to leave without their pets endured long searches to find animals that had been ferried to safety without them. You'd think that finding that their pets were alive and well after the storm would be pure joy, but for some, it was more complicated.

The documentary "Mine," released Friday, tells the stories of people who found their pets in new homes, with rescuers or adopters who didn't want to give them back.

"A lot of the people that I met just didn't know what they could do," says filmmaker Geralyn Pezanoski. "Their animals were out of state, they didn't have the resources."

It's the first full week of 2010, and that means it's the beginning of dumping ground season. New movies out of Hollywood will be looking less and less appealing over the next few months, but that shouldn't stop you from going to the movies, especially if you live in a major metropolitan area. Now is the time especially for foreign films hoping for Oscar contention to start rolling out in America, and of course tons and tons of documentaries will continue to see limited release. This week, there's even a hot new exploitation flick opening, for those of you who like that sort of thing. Erin Essenmacher is a writer, director and producer with over 10 years of experience in corporate, non-profit and broadcast production with a strong focus on documentary. Jason Rhein is a director of photography and media producer based out of New Orleans, where he is currently working on his second season as Music Producer & Supervisor for Playhouse Disney’s Imagination Movers series. He is also the Technical Director for the nationally syndicated public radio-show American Routes. Jason recently worked as Sound Designer on the documentary Member of the Club, as the editor on the short Watermarks and has done camerawork for a number of other projects, including the short film Code 7. Jason plays bass in the rock band, Rotary Downs (also showcasing at SXSW this year). MINE is Jason’s debut feature as director of photography.

ARLO ROSNER
Arlo Rosner is an award-winning cinematographer, with a broad range of experience in commercials, music videos, narrative, documentary, and television. Arlo has a degree in film from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. In addition to his many accolades and three Addy Awards, he won a gold statue at the 2005 Clio Awards. His most recent credits include director of photography on the acclaimed feature documentary Beautiful Losers.

“The World's Best Pet Is Mine!” Contest

How to enter: No purchase necessary to enter or win “The World's Best Pet Is Mine!” contest. Beginning January 4^th, 2010 (12:00 a.m. EST) and ending January 29^th, 2010 (11:59 p.m. EST), email a photo (in JPEG format and no larger than 2MB) of your pet to minethemovie@filmmovement.com, along with a maximum of One Hundred (100) word essay (the “Essay”) describing why, in your opinion, your pet is the world’s best. Please also include your pet’s name, your name, complete mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone number.

Entries submitted before January 4^th or after January 29th will not be considered. By participating in the contest, entrants certify that his/her entry is original, has not been previously published or won any award, and does not contain any material that would violate or infringe upon the rights of any third party, including copyrights, and trademarks. Film Movement, LLC, (“Film Movement”), the distributor of the film Mine (the “Film”), reserves the right as its sole and unfettered discretion to disqualify any entry it believes contains obscene, offensive or inappropriate content, that does not comply with these official rules, or that is not consistent with the theme of the contest. By submitting a photo, entrants agree that their photo may be used for publicity and marketing purposes and consent to such use without any payment of any payment of any kind. The semi finalists will then be eligible to receive The Grand Prize. This will be selected by a panel of judges (the “Judges”), consisting of Geralyn Pezanoski, the Director of the Film, and Adley Gartenstein, the President of Film Movement, in their sole discretion.
